Aromatic scents – when fragrance becomes a safe haven

Æteriske dufte – når duften bliver en tryg havn

There's something truly special about scent. It affects us before thought does. A scent can evoke memories, create calm, lift spirits, provide energy – and sometimes it feels as if the body remembers the scent before the conscious mind does.

For me, essential oils have become an important part of my daily life. They are not just about well-being, but small rituals that help me find my way back to myself when life moves fast. I use them as a form of comfort practice – a quiet anchor that helps me return home, both in body and mind.

What does science say about essential oils?

Modern research is increasingly beginning to uncover what Ayurveda has always known: that scent affects us right down to our emotional and hormonal systems.

When we inhale scent molecules, signals are sent directly to the limbic system in the brain – the area that regulates emotions, memory, stress, and hormonal balance.
Studies show, among other things, that essential oils can:

  • lower the level of the stress hormone cortisol

  • improve sleep quality

  • regulate heart rate

  • affect mood and emotional well-being

  • strengthen the experience of calm and presence

So, scents are not just "a good feeling." They directly affect the nervous system.

Ayurveda and scents – prana, balance, and elements

In Ayurveda, scent and plant essences are a natural tool for balance. Essential oils are seen as the plant's prana – its life force – and therefore something that can support our own prana.

Ayurveda works with the elements and doshas, and scents can help us regulate what is out of balance:

  • If there is too much heat and intensity (Pitta), cooling and calming scents are used.

  • For restlessness, agitation, or memory fluctuations (Vata), warm, sweet, and grounding scents are used.

  • If the body feels heavy, melancholic, or sluggish (Kapha), uplifting and activating scents are used.

In this way, scents are a subtle but powerful tool – a small daily ritual that can support the body where it needs it.

How I use ayú scents in my daily life

I use ayú scents as small, sensory practices throughout the day. Small moments of calm, support, and awareness that help me stay connected with myself.

  • In the morning:
The Kapha scent helps me awaken both body and mind. It boosts my energy, sharpens my awareness, and gives me a gentle push into the day. A quiet, gentle awakening.

  • When the day is hectic:
When the pace, demands, or my own drive to perform take over, I use the Pitta scent to slow down, cool the system, and find calm. It feels like a small breathing space in the midst of everyday life.

  • For imbalance in the body or mind:
When sleep is difficult, my mood fluctuates, or I feel overwhelmed, I choose the scent that matches what I am feeling. The body often knows what it needs.

  • During menopause:
The scents have become a loving support during this phase:

    • The Pitta scent soothes heat and hot flashes.

    • The Vata scent helps with restlessness, agitation, and memory fluctuations.

    • The Kapha scent boosts energy and lightness when heaviness or melancholy prevail.

  • After exercise:
I use the Pitta scent to cool the body down, regain calm, and bring the nervous system back into balance.

  • Before bedtime:
The Vata scent is my constant companion. It helps me release the day's impressions and fall into a soft, deeper calm.

The scents have become a safe haven for me – familiar, supportive, and comforting. And yes… of course, I also just use them because they smell wonderful.

When the aroma diffuser is on, the whole house fills with a warm and familiar atmosphere that feels like home.

Scents are just one way essential oils can support us

What I describe here is only one part of what essential oils can do.
They can do much more than that, and their effects unfold physically, mentally, emotionally, and energetically.

But for me, the most important thing is this:
That scents have become a way of being in the world.
A way to pause, listen inward, and take care of myself – amidst the movement of everyday life.
