Golden Milk – nourishment, calm, and warmth in a cup

Golden Milk – næring, ro og varme i en kop

For me, Golden Milk is much more than just a drink. It's a small, golden break in my everyday life – a moment where I feel calm spread and my body settle down.

I often drink it as a nutritious snack, but also in the evening when I need to wind down after a long day.

Especially during periods when sleep is difficult, it has become a small ritual that helps me find peace again.

The good milk

I always use whole milk. It's important to me because it contains so much natural nutrition, fat, and vitamins that the body needs – especially when you want to support hormone balance and the nervous system. But of course, you can also use oat milk or almond milk if you prefer. Here, I recommend making it yourself.

Most plant-based drinks that can last for months are processed to extend their shelf life – and to me, that feels a bit wrong. In Ayurveda, food that has "been still for too long" is considered old food – and our body thrives best when we give it fresh, living nourishment.

A recipe with history

My recipe for Golden Milk has changed many times over the years. It has been adapted according to season, need, and taste – and that's how it should be. In India, every family makes their own masala chai , and in Nepal, each family has its very own Dal Bhat . I like the idea that Golden Milk can also become such a tradition – something personal and alive that changes with us.

It's not about following a quick recipe, but about sensing what the body needs. Maybe a little more sweetness on a cold day, a little more warmth from the turmeric, or a hint of cardamom for the heart.

Ease and presence

I like to make a whole can at a time, so the mixture is ready in the kitchen. This makes it easy to make a cup when I feel like it. For me, it's important that the things that are good for us are also accessible. If it becomes too difficult, we won't do it – and then we lose the rhythm that could otherwise have given us peace.

I use a milk frother to make my Golden Milk. It's an easy and quick way to get a perfectly creamy drink. I fill the milk frother with milk, add my Golden Milk mixture, and let it do the work for me. Once the mixture is ready, I pour it through a small sieve so the drink is completely clean and free of spice residue – and then it's ready to enjoy. It only takes a couple of minutes, and it feels like a little luxury in the middle of the day.

My basic recipe

For one cup of Golden Milk, I use:

  • approx. 1 tbsp. coconut sugar

  • ½ tsp. shatavari (strengthening and balancing)

  • ¼ tsp. turmeric (warming and anti-inflammatory)

  • ½ tsp. cardamom (calming for the mind and digestion)

  • approx. 1 dl whole milk

I add everything to the milk frother and let it heat and mix.

A cup of calm

Golden Milk has become my little everyday ritual – a moment of warmth, calm, and nourishment. A reminder that even the smallest actions can have a big impact when done with presence.

When I drink it, I feel a calm spread from within – as if my body is saying "thank you." And that's really what Ayurveda constantly reminds us: to listen, feel, and give the body what it needs.
